Based on a real incident in Raniganj, West Bengal, in 1989, the rescue thriller depicts a tragedy where six miners lost their lives, and 65 were trapped in a flooded coal mine. Akshay Kumar portrays Jaswant Singh Gill, a mining engineer and trained rescue official, who saved all 65 miners, earning recognition as a national hero.

Joining Akshay Kumar, the ensemble cast of Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue boasts talents such as Parineeti Chopra, Kumud Mishra, Pavan Malhotra, Jameel Khan, Ravi Kishan, Varun Badola, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sudhir Pandey, and Shishir Sharma. The film was previously associated with titles Capsule Gill and The Great Indian Rescue.

Reuniting after seven years, this film marks Akshay Kumar and Tinu Suresh Desai’s second project together. Their previous collaboration, Rustom, depicted the real-life story of Indian naval officer KM Nanavati. The film centred on Nanavati’s trial for the murder of his wife’s lover, Prem Ahuja, marking the last jury trial in Indian legal history.

Mission Raniganj, directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and featuring Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra in crucial roles, is currently trending in 12 countries. Released in theatres on October 6, the rescue thriller Mission Raniganj received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. The film, unfortunately, faced commercial challenges as it fell short of recovering its budget of Rs 55 crore, earning just Rs 46 crore worldwide at the box office.
