Bangladesh defeated India for the first time in 11 years on the continental stage as Shakib Al Hasan’s men beat Rohit Sharma’s side by 6 runs in the last match of Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 stage. Shubman Gill smashed 121 runs but his century went in vain as Bangladesh restricted India to a total of 259, having scored 265/8 themselves.
Bangladesh registered their first win over India since 2012, Shakib Al Hasan had won the POTM back then, and he won the POTM once again, ageing like fine wine, the Bangladesh captain.
Earlier, Shakib scored 80 runs with the bat and picked up a crucial wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, as India were all out for 259, chasing 266, falling short by 6 runs just before the Asia Cup 2023 final.
Axar Patel scored a 42-run knock and if not for his dismissal India could have won the game but Mustafizur's two late wickets, turned the match on its head.
Shubman Gill scored a 121-run knock but his dismissal started the collapse of India's batting order. He kept things tight at one end but fell short of partners ultimately.
Bangladesh jolted India with two early blows as Rohit Sharma was dismissed on a duck, while Tilak Varma could only score 5 on his debut but Shubman Gill kept India in contention with his valiant knock.
Apart from Gill's 121 and Axar's 42, Suryakumar Yadav scored 26 while the rest of the batters failed to contribute in the chase.
Tanzim Hasan Sakib gave Bangladesh early belief in their inning as the youngster dismissed Rohit and Tilak on his ODI debut and he was very impressive throughout.
Nasum Ahmed scored 44 runs and the late-order contributions from Tanzim, and Mahedi helped Bangladesh reach 265.
Earlier, India had Bangladesh reeling at 59/4 with Shardul Thakur's twin early strikes as well as Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel's wickets but Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy's partnership saved the day for the Bangla Tigers.
To add to his captain's 80-run knock, Hridoy smashed 54 and helped Bangladesh recover from the early collapse. They outplayed India in all departments and thoroughly deserved the win.
