It was a horror start for India as both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill failed to open their account and departed for ducks.

Young India opening pair Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal registered their name in an unwanted record tally after a flop show in the second T20I against South Africa at St George’s Park, Gqeberha. Asked to bat first, India lost the opening pair early inside two overs.

It was a horror start for the visitors as both Yashasvi and Gill failed to open their account and departed for ducks.

Jaiswal was dismissed on the third ball of the match as he went to for a cut shot on Marco Jansen’s length delivery but was caught by David Miller at the point.

Meanwhile, in the next over, Gill was trapped in front of the wicket by Lizaad Williams. It was a brilliant delivery which nipped back in and hit Gill’s back pad as the Indian opener also wasted a review in the attempt to save his wicket.

Yashasvi-Gill became the second Indian opening pair in T20I cricket to bag ducks as Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane suffered the same fate in 2016 against Pakistan in Mirpur.

Earlier, South Africa skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bowl first.

The first match in the three-game series was rained off without a ball bowled in Durban on Sunday.

India’s ODI World Cup stars Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj returned to the XI as Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan and Ravi Bishnoi had to sit out.

India opener Ruturaj Gaikwad was not available for selection due to illness.

Both teams are missing several key players, who are being rested ahead of a Test series at the end of the tour.
