Following the TMC MP's suspension, the House passed a resolution suspending five Congress MPs and then a second resolution suspending nine more MPs from various opposition parties

Amid uproar in the Parliament over Wednesday’s massive security breach, as many as 14 MPs from various Opposition parties were suspended today for disrupting House proceedings.

Among the ones suspended, nine were Congress MPs, one from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), two from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM, one from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and one from Trinamool Congress (TMC). The suspension of DMK MP SR Parthiban was withdrawn later after his party complained that he was not present in the House today.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said Parthiban’s name was mistakenly added to the suspension list.

TMC member Derek O’Brien was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the Winter session alleging “unruly behaviour” and “misconduct”.

After accusing O’Brien of violating the directions of the chair and for disrupting the proceedings of the House, the chairman allowed Leader of the House Piyush Goyal to move a motion in this regard.

Following the TMC MP’s suspension, the House passed a resolution suspending five Congress MPs — T N Prathapan, Hibi Eden, Jothimani, Ramya Haridas and Dean Kuriakose for the remaining session after the Speaker named them for disrupting House proceedings.

The Lower House however, also passed a second resolution suspending nine more MPs from various Opposition parties due to the same reason as for the suspension of the other six MPs.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi moved the resolution to suspend VK Sreekandan (Congress), Benny Behanan (Congress), Mohammad Jawed (Congress), PR Natarajan (CPI-M), Kanimozhi (DMK), K. Subbarayan (CPI), SR Parthiban (DMK), S Venkatesan (CPI-M) and Manickam Tagore (Congress).
