Director PS Vinothraj has already made it big last year with his debut film Koozhangal being India’s official entry for the Oscars in 2022. Now, the filmmaker is going international once again as his second project Kottukkaali, starring Soori and Anna Ben has been selected for a prestigious international film festival. Kottukkaali, which is produced by Sivakarthikeyan, will have its grand premier at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. The movie has been selected in the World Cinema section. Sivakarthikeyan announced the development in a recent tweet and said that he was “super proud" of the film and its crew.
Raghav Ramesh provided the sync sound for Kottukkaali. B Sakthi Vel handled the photography, Ganesh Siva handled the editing, while Suren G and S Alagia Koothan handled the sound design. In a previous interview with the media, co-producer Kalai Arasu said, “The film is a drama about humans and their emotions. We wish to withhold the precise narrative of the movie for the time being"
Following Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai, this movie marks Soori’s second film as a protagonist. The movie will be Anna Ben’s first in the Tamil cinema industry. Her most well-known part to date has been Helen, the title character in the 2019 Malayalam movie. “Actors like Soori and Anna Ben were required by Kottukkaali’s storyline", says Kalai Arasu.
The title of the movie is an uncommon term. Kalai explains its meaning by saying, “Kottukkaali is a colloquial term used for both endearment and reprimand." He said of the roosters on the first-look poster, “The rooster is like a character in Kottukkaali. It makes the screenplay move forward".
Previous Berlin Film Festival screenings included Paruthiveeran, Alaipayuthey, and a number of other films that were released in theatres. This will be the first time a Tamil movie will have a global premiere.
