The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested a man for allegedly strangulating his son to death for switching off the television during the World Cup Finals 2023 between India and Australia on Sunday.

The man identified as Ganesh Prasad, a native of Kanpur was watching the World Cup Finals when his son, Deepak Nishad demanded first to prepare the dinner, reports India Today.

Ganesh ignored his son’s calling which eventually led to an argument, said the police adding that his son turned off the television set, causing a physical altercation between them.

In a fit of anger, Prasad with an electric cable wire choked his son Deepak to death and fled the scene, said the Kanpur police.

But he was soon nabbed by them and was sent to custody, while the body of the victim was sent for post-mortem.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Brij Narayan Singh, in charge of Chakeri police station, was quoted as saying by India Today that there were frequent quarrels between the two over Ganesh’s drinking habit. However, the immediate reason for Deepak’s death on Sunday was a dispute over watching the cricket match, said the police.

In a separate incident, two persons allegedly died by suicide in West Bengal’s Bankura and Odisha’s Jajpur after India lost to Australia in the cricket World Cup final, officials said.

Rahul Lohar, 23, took the extreme step near a cinema hall around 11 pm on Sunday in the Beliatore police station area of Bankura, following India’s six-wicket loss to Australia in Ahmedabad, they said.

Heartbroken by the result, he hung himself in his room, Lohar’s brother-in-law Uttam Sur said, according to police.

His body was sent to the Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital on Monday morning for post-mortem examination, a police officer said, adding, that a case of unnatural death was registered.

In Odisha’s Jajpur, another 23-year-old man was found hanging from the terrace of his house in the Binjharpur area shortly after the match on Sunday night, police said.

The deceased, Dev Ranjan Das, had been undergoing treatment for “emotional disorder syndrome”, his uncle told the police.
