A fisherman at Sagar Nagar in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam has found one of the most venomous sea snakes trapped in his fishing net.

Hydrophis sea snake, which lives in the deep water of the ocean, is said to be most venomous snakes. The scientific name of the reptile is Hydrophis Belcheri.

The fishermen said that if the snake bites anyone in the sea, the person will die before reaching to the sea shore.

The sea snake is the most poisonous sea specie as its venom is 100 times more deadly than the most poisonous terrestrial species.

The rare snake was caught in the net of the fisherman on Tuesday evening. It crept in to a shoal of fish to catch the prey, the fisherman said. Then the snake was caught along with the fishes trapped in the fishing net. The fisherman later released the seven feet snake safely back in to the sea.

“Its scientific name is Hydrophis and it lives in the deep waters of the ocean. This snake is most venomous and dangerous. One has to immediately undergo medical treatment the moment it bites. Otherwise, the victim dies within a short time,” Dr P Srinivasa Rao, Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department, said.

According to Rao, the Hydrophis sea snake lives by eating small fishes and weed in the water. In search of food, it fell in the trap of fishing net where it found a shoal of fish.

The local fishermen call the snake as Katla Paamu. The fishermen remain cautious of the reptile or it will bite them when trapped in the net.
