Hyderabad-based progressive rock fusion band Threeory discusses their surprising journey and working with Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Ranbir Kapoor's epic entrance scene in the film Animal.

Talking about their fortunate collab with Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Animal, as well as the wonderful experience of having their music included in Ranbir Kapoor's entry, is Threeory Band. The members discuss how they feel and express gratitude for the widespread love their music has garnered.

As they discuss their origins, the growth of their band, and the variety of musical influences that go into creating their unique sound, learn the intriguing tale of how Threeory came to be. The band’s unexpected collab with Animal’s brilliant director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, is discussed in the interview, along with how their rendition of Roja captured his interest and led to a collaboration that has elevated their music to previously unheard-of levels. The musicians talk about their incredible meeting with Ranbir Kapoor and much more in this exclusive interview with News18.com.

Excerpts from the interview:

Could you tell us how Threeory came to be and what led to their formation?

Initially, the band’s journey began with Mark (Keys) and Sai, who had the idea to form a band in 2013. They teamed up with a drummer and decided to bring their musical vision to life. It was during this time that they came up with the name “Threeory," signifying the three founding members.

As they started performing at local shows and events, the band’s lineup expanded. They crossed paths with Synty, who joined as the lead vocalist, and Along, who became the guitarist. In 2016, they welcomed Tarun as their drummer. Together, we shared a common passion for delivering a unique blend of progressive fusion rock. As their musical journey continued, the band grew even further. Akhil joined as the lead vocalist, Irfan as the sitarist, Pavan as the tabla player, and Imti as the bassist. Now, in 2023, our ensemble has grown to include nine talented members. This diverse group consists of a male and female vocalist, a drummer, a guitarist, a violinist, a keyboard player, a sitarist, a tabla player, and a bassist. Over the years, we’ve evolved into a remarkably talented and multifaceted musical collective! Artists from the band who made a cameo in the film:

Sai: Violin

Tarun:  drummer

Along:  Guitarist

Mark: Keys

Imti: bassist

How did the collaboration with the team behind Animal by Sandeep Reddy Vanga come about?

Six years ago, fate led us to perform at Arjun Reddy’s audio launch, where we first crossed paths with Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Shortly after, he stumbled upon our ‘Roja’ rendition on YouTube. A little surprise call later, we found ourselves rushing to catch a flight to Mumbai for a shoot, clueless about what awaited us. The day before the shoot, he introduced us to Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandana, unveiling his vision for Ranbir’s grand entrance.

When you learned that your song would be included in Ranbir Kapoor’s movie entry moment, how did you first feel?

Having known our band from the Arjun Reddy audio launch, Mr. Vanga stumbled upon our YouTube video and envisioned Ranbir’s character blending with our music. His vision aligned so perfectly that we performed just as in the video, setting the stage for Ranbir’s graceful entrance. His ability to create a relaxed atmosphere made it feel like we were back on our usual stage when he called ‘Action!’ Encouraging us to play from the heart was all he asked for.

One memory stands out vividly; it’s a moment we still fondly recall. Mr. Vanga introduced us to Ranbir Kapoor, who graciously rose from his chair and introduced himself to greet us humbly. We were left in awe, wondering, ‘Did Ranbir Kapoor just introduce himself to us?

How does it feel to see your music being heard by people all over the world as Ranbir’s entry scene has gone viral?

We had confidence that people would enjoy it, but the overwhelming love surpassed all our expectations. These past few days have been a whirlwind for us and our phones, with notifications becoming our favourite melody. Gratitude fills our hearts immensely!

What artists have influenced you the most, and how have they influenced Threeory’s distinctive sound?

What truly defines inspiration within our band is our diversity—nine of us from various ethnic backgrounds, each with unique influences that converge to shape our musical vision. From attending Mr. AR Rahman’s concerts to looping his music for hours, years of cherished inspiration fueled our creation of the ‘Roja’ rock version.

What kind of reaction have you received regarding the particular scene that features your music, and how has the reception from the public been since the release of Animal?

The most incredible part of this journey is the recognition from people. Being tagged and mentioned in posts made us realise that they traced back to a video from six years ago—it’s truly unbelievable.
