Did you know that a Mumbai man spent Rs 42 lakh on Swiggy in 2023? Food delivery app's annual report sends internet into a frenzy.

Want to know how much India Swiggy’d this year? Well, the food delivery juggernaut Swiggy just dropped its annual culinary data – the 2023 ‘Swiggy Wrap’ report. And mind you, the report isn’t your typical snoozefest; it’s a tasty journey filled with ‘savoury’ tidbits about Swiggy’s top customers and eye-popping orders.

To top it all, a denizen of Mumbai stole the spotlight as one of Swiggy’s high rollers, spending a staggering Rs 42.3 lakh on food throughout the year. Pause. Yes, you read that right – a small fortune on gastronomic delights! The internet collectively rubbed its eyes in disbelief at this culinary spectacle, prompting double takes and exclamations of, “Rs. 42 lakh on food, really?”

On the internet, users couldn’t help but share their amazement. “A 42L worth order… What would it mean in terms of Calories…” pondered one user on a post by Moneycontrol’s Deputy Executive Editor, offering a tantalising glimpse into Swiggy’s intriguing trends. Witty quips flooded in, with one user speculating about the income tax department’s curiosity regarding the Mumbai user’s PAN.

Another chimed in, asserting, “So it’s good to say Mumbai is not just financial capital but also the food capital of India.” Someone did some calculations, writing, “42.3 L for a user is ~11.5k per day average which looks unrealistic unless he used his card as single source payment for family/ institution/ corporation etc.”

But hold your forks; that’s not the only showstopper from the Swiggy report!

In a remarkable feat, India ordered 2.5 biryanis every second in 2023, with a Hyderabadi individual leading the charge by placing an astonishing 1,633 biryani orders—equivalent to over four biryanis daily.

Yet, the biryani surprises don’t stop there. Chandigarh emerged as an unexpected biryani haven, with one family ordering a jaw-dropping 70 plates during a nail-biting India vs. Pakistan match.

Meanwhile, in the unofficial biryani capital, Hyderabad, a daring customer deviated from tradition, shelling out a whopping 6 lakhs on an entirely different dish – idlis.

Here’s some more spice from the Swiggy scroll:

  • Biryani kept its crown as the reigning champ, securing the title of the most ordered dish on Swiggy for the eighth year straight.
  • For every 5.5 chicken biryanis, a veg biryani popped up on the radar. On January 1 alone, a mind-boggling 430,000 biryanis hit the platform.
  • Hyderabad snagged the title of the biryani belly of India, with every sixth biryani landing on its doorstep. And if you’re craving cake, Bangalore proudly wore the “Cake Capital” crown, boasting a whopping 8.5 million orders for chocolate cake alone, with Mother’s Day being the sweetest day of all.
  • A whopping 2.49 million newcomers kicked off their Swiggy journey with a biryani order.
  • In the ultimate savvy eater move, one Swiggy One user managed to save an impressive Rs 6.98 lakhs through free deliveries, discounts, and other coupons.
